Simon's Wings For Life
/Blog by Simon Gilbertson - Monday 9th May, our online Rejoover who lives in Melbourne:
"Last night down here in Melb's, I participated in the Red Bull Wings for Life World Run with over 100,000 others simultaneously around the world. For those who don't know, it's a run with no finish line. A 'catcher car' starts out half an hour after the runners and progressively speeds up. Your race is over when the catcher car passes you.
This year I ticked through 34.34km at a consistent pace which put me 38th male in Aus and 1,426th male worldwide. In context, the overall winner did 88km in Italy averaging 3:45/km... I can't even comprehend!
A 9pm start on a Sunday might not be for everyone but it's certainly a unique experience!"
Wings for Life is a World Run where entrants run for those who can’t. Wings for Life is a charity whose mission is to make spinal cord injury curable. 100% of the entry fee goes towards spinal cord research. This run is extra special to Simon as it might be the longest he gets to run due to his degenerative knees. He has taken part in all kinds of fabulous fun runs this year such as Rip to River, Run for the Kids, Run to the Dog and Run the Rock along with regular Parkruns. He has to have a special Rejoov online running program including plenty of low impact cross training and graded running. It is important for everyone to have a tailored program to suit individual needs, there are so many factors to take into account.
Next on the cards Simon is heading north for Sydney's City to Surf and we wish him all the best.
Happy running and cross training everyone. Why do we do it? ...Because it is good for us.
